Steam Top Sellers: where the lists show and how rank is worked out

30 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

Top Sellers is the list most players see first on the Steam home page, and versions of it sit on every tag and genre page. Valve builds all of them automatically from what players spend. This guide covers where the lists show, how rank is worked out and who sees what, from Valve's Top Sellers lists doc, checked 30 Oct 2026.

How rank is worked out

▪All revenue counts. Base game purchases, DLC and in-game transactions contribute equally.
▪The real-time chart looks back 24 hours. Steam adds up each game's player spending over the trailing 24 hours and gives extra weight to the last 3 hours, so a popular new release or a game trending up shows quickly.
▪Editions are combined. Several editions of the same game count as one, so the chart is not filled with duplicates.
▪Free to play games are included. The charts used to list premium games only, which hid popular free or cheap games whose players go on to buy season passes, expansions and other content.

Nobody picks the games. Valve says it has no editorial team choosing games for Top Sellers, Popular New Releases, Popular Upcoming or the other storefront charts. They come from player data.

If one package holds several apps, which Valve calls uncommon, the Sales & Activations Reporting portal shows which app its sales are credited to.

Who sees what

▪Country lists. For a set of the most popular countries on Steam, Valve makes country-specific lists by default and shows players their own country. On the Steam Charts page anyone can switch to the global view or another country.
▪Content preferences. The list respects what each player has filtered out in their store preferences. Players can also hide games they own and hide free to play games.
▪DLC. Players who own your game can see a DLC climbing the list; players who do not see the base game instead. The DLC still adds to the game's rank.

One way in among many

Valve says the charts are not meant to favor one business model over another, and that Top Sellers is only one of many ways players find games; many recommendation sources have nothing to do with revenue. The free exposure Steam gives at launch and after updates is in Steam visibility rounds, the personalized release list in Steam Personal Calendar, and Valve's background in its Visibility docs.

Valve's caution on discounting early to chase the charts is in Steam discount rules.

Where a broadcast fits

Every click on a chart entry lands on a store page. A store page broadcast shows the game moving there. Loopcast keeps one running from an uploaded video, billed per minute on air. You can try it free for 7 days, no card needed.

FAQ

How does the Steam real-time Top Sellers chart work?

For each game Steam adds up all player spending over the last 24 hours and gives extra weight to the last 3 hours, so the chart reacts quickly to a popular new release or a game trending up.

What revenue counts toward Steam Top Sellers?

All of it. Base game purchases, DLC and microtransactions contribute equally.

Does Valve pick the games on the Top Sellers list?

No. Valve has no editorial team picking games for Top Sellers, Popular New Releases, Popular Upcoming or other storefront charts. They are built from player data.

Can DLC appear on Steam Top Sellers?

Yes. Players who own the base game can see the DLC on the list, while players who do not own it see the base game. DLC sales still count toward the game's rank.
