Steam achievements on your store page: icons, limits and sets

31 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

Achievements live in your game, but players also see them on your store page and in the Steam Community. This guide covers only that side: where they show, the store setting and release checklist rules, icon sizes, limits and sets, from Valve's stats and achievements doc and its achievements guide, checked 31 Oct 2026. The SDK calls are in Valve's guide.

Where players see them

▪Your store page: an achievements panel. Spoiler and archived achievements are not shown in it.
▪Global stats: your game's main Steam page links to its global achievement statistics, the percentage of players who earned each one, ordered from most common to rarest.
▪Player profiles: each player's Community profile links to a page of what they have earned and what is still locked, with your icons, names and descriptions, in their language when you localized them.
▪In game: when unlocked, an achievement pops up in the corner of the player's window.
▪DLC store pages: an achievements panel for that DLC's achievement set (see sets below).

Valve notes that achievements are not shown until your app is somewhat visible to the community, and that before release you cannot see in the Community or library which ones have been earned. You can preview them on your own achievements page, linked from the top of the editor.

The store setting and the release checklist

Defining achievements is not enough on its own. Valve says that to fully enable them and complete your release checklist you also check Steam Achievements under Supported Features in your store page's basic info. To pass the release checklist:

▪every achievement needs a name in each language you configured, and
▪every achievement needs an icon.

Edits in the achievements editor are saved as a draft. They go live when you publish from the Publish tab in Edit Steamworks Settings, like any other Steamworks setting.

What players read on each achievement

FieldWhat Valve says
Display NameThe name shown to players. Localizable.
DescriptionThe description shown to players. Localizable.
IconsAn achieved icon and an unachieved icon.
Progress StatOptional. A stat that shows progress toward the achievement, with the range that maps to 0% and 100%.
VisibilityVisible, or Spoiler to hide the name and description until it is unlocked.

Valve also says achievement names and icons should be all-ages appropriate. The language list is set with the editor's Language selector, and the editor flags any language with missing text; see Steam localization for the store side of languages.

Icon sizes

SpecValve's rule
Recommended256x256 px PNG
Minimum64x64 px
ShapeSquare; larger icons are scaled down to 256x256
FormatsPNG, JPG also accepted
Unachieved iconValve recommends grayscale; the editor can generate it from the achieved icon

Valve recommends colorful achieved icons. A generated grayscale unachieved icon can be replaced with your own at any time, and icons can be uploaded in bulk.

Limits

ItemLimit
Achievements per app5,000 (100 for apps that have not yet been vetted)
Sets per app40, including the base game set

Archived achievements count toward the achievement limit. Valve's stats doc words the starting limit this way: games are limited to 100 achievements at first, and once the app reaches the threshold for Profile Features it can add more. The editor shows how many achievements and sets you use out of your limits.

Spoiler and archived achievements

▪Spoiler (formerly called Hidden): the name and description stay hidden until the player unlocks it or chooses to reveal it.
▪Archived: for an achievement that can no longer be earned. Players who unlocked it still see it and can feature it on their profile; players who did not never see it, and it does not count against their completion. Make sure the game no longer awards it.
▪Deleting removes an achievement for everyone, including players who earned it. If players have earned it, the editor recommends archiving instead.

Achievement sets

Valve marks sets as a beta feature. Every achievement belongs to the Base game set unless you assign it elsewhere. Custom sets have a name players see, and can be open to all players or restricted to owners of a DLC. Completion is tracked per set, and a completed set stays completed even if you add achievements to it later. Players can show completed games and sets on their profile; a game qualifies for the Completionist Showcase once a player completes any of its sets.

A DLC set (shown with a "DLC" prefix):

▪can be explored by all players, but only players who can play the DLC can earn it,
▪does not count toward completion of the base game or other sets,
▪stays hidden until the DLC is released,
▪uses the DLC's store artwork and link on the achievements page (the base game's if the DLC has no published store page; the editor warns you), and
▪is shown in an achievements panel on the DLC's store page.

A developer-only set is visible only to the app's developers, released or not, which is how Valve suggests testing new achievements before players see them.

Where a broadcast fits

Valve's achievements docs cover the game, the store panel and the Community; they say nothing about broadcasts. A store page broadcast is a separate thing: your game in motion on the store page. Loopcast keeps one running from an uploaded video, billed per minute on air. You can try it free for 7 days, no card needed.
