Steam Playtest vs demo: which one, and when
27 Oct 2026 · 6 min read
Steam gives you two free ways to let players try a game before it is out: a Steam Playtest and a demo. They look alike from the outside, but Valve built them for different jobs, and the events treat them differently: Next Fest needs a demo, and themed fests do not take playtests. Everything below comes from Valve's Steam Playtest and Demos documentation, checked 27 Oct 2026.
| Steam Playtest | Demo | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A separate "child" App ID for testing | A separate App ID with a playable part of the game |
| Store presence | A signup section on the base game page | A button on the base game page, or its own page |
| Who can play | Players you let in, or open signup, or keys | Anyone, once it is released |
| Store review | Capsule images and icons only | Its own, shorter, release checklist |
| Next Fest | Not accepted | Required: publicly playable by the start |
| Themed fests | Not included | Welcome, in a Demos section |
| Wishlist email | Not mentioned in the Playtest docs | One, within two weeks of first release |
| Switching off | Set to "Not Playable" | "Deactivate Demo" under Technical Tools |

What a Steam Playtest is for
Valve describes Playtest as a free, low-risk way to get playtesting data without stressing about Steam keys, user reviews or wishlists. It runs on a separate "child" App ID tied to your main game, with the same Steamworks technical features but a reduced store and community setup. It has no store page of its own: the signup sits on your base game's page, so players can request access and still wishlist or follow the main game.
What a demo is for
A demo is a small playable portion of the game, there to help players decide to buy or wishlist. Valve stresses quality and length: it should measure up to the real game without giving everything away. On timing, Valve generally recommends waiting until launch, but says a demo before release can help when players need to touch the game to understand it. Before launch, your base game needs a visible Coming Soon page so people can wishlist it.
Next Fest needs a demo
For Steam Next Fest: February 2027, Valve requires a publicly playable demo by the time the festival begins, a published and public store page, and a game released after the fest ends on 1 March 2027. The demo must not be a prologue, chapter 1 or other demo version of content customers can already get. A game can appear in only one Next Fest, so choose the edition that fits your release. A Playtest does not count. The Next Fest checklist has the full timeline.
Themed fests take demos, not playtests
Valve's themed sale events FAQ is short on this: themed fests currently do not include playtests. Demos of unreleased and released games are welcome and get their own section, and registration uses the base game's tags. See Steam themed fests 2027 for how invites work.
Which one, then
Use a Playtest while you still need test data: balance, servers, bugs, a closed group you widen when you are ready. Use a demo when you want to win players: it can sit on the store page, show up in demo lists, send one wishlist email and enter Next Fest and the themed fests. You can run a Playtest first and a demo later; nothing in Valve's docs stops you having both. After launch, a Free Weekend is a third option.
Confidential tests. For an unannounced game, Valve says it is best to announce first. If you must test in secret, it suggests Release State Override keys on the unreleased base app, not a Playtest, and warns a test is only as confidential as your least careful tester.
Streaming a demo
If you broadcast demo footage to your store page, the stream must carry the base game's App ID, not the demo's; the demo broadcast guide covers why. Loopcast keeps that broadcast running from an uploaded video, with no PC left on at home, billed per minute on air. You can try it free for 7 days, no card needed.
FAQ
Can I enter Steam Next Fest with a Playtest?
No. Valve's February 2027 rules require a publicly playable demo by the time the festival begins, and the demo must not be a prologue, chapter 1 or other demo version of content already available.
Can a Playtest take part in a Steam themed fest?
No. Valve says themed sale events currently do not include playtests. Demos are welcome and get their own section.
Does a Steam Playtest have its own store page?
No. The signup shows as a section on your base game's store page, so players can sign up and still wishlist or follow the main game.
Can I send a wishlist email when my demo launches?
Yes, once. After the demo is first playable, you can trigger a notification to players who wishlisted the full game, from the demo's app landing page, within two weeks.
Can I switch a Playtest or demo off later?
Yes. Set a Playtest to Not Playable, or use Deactivate Demo under Technical Tools. Keys already granted for a Playtest are not revoked, and a deactivated demo stays in players' libraries but cannot be launched.
