YouTube publishes recommended settings rather than hard requirements, which makes it more forgiving than Steam - but a stream that runs for weeks is judged on stability, not peak quality. Here is what to target and why.
Resolution: 1920×1080 at 30fps covers almost every case. 60fps doubles your bitrate need for footage that is usually not fast enough to justify it.
Bitrate: 4,500–9,000 kbps is the recommended band for 1080p30. Loopcast encodes at 6,000 kbps.
Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube requires 4 seconds or less and recommends 2; every viewer joining mid-loop waits for the next keyframe before they see anything.
Codec: H.264 video, AAC audio at 128 kbps.
A twenty-four hour stream is a bandwidth commitment, not a burst. Sitting at the top of the recommended range means every transient network problem becomes a dropped frame, and dropped frames over a long run are what push YouTube to downgrade the stream health warning into an actual interruption. A stream at 6,000 kbps that never wobbles beats one at 9,000 kbps that stutters twice an hour.
Variable bitrate saves bandwidth on still scenes, which sounds ideal for ambient loops. In practice live ingest prefers a predictable stream, and CBR is what keeps the buffer behaving over a long session. Loopcast encodes CBR for exactly this reason.
