Steam capsule art sizes and rules

22 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

Steam asks for more than a dozen images, each at an exact size, and since September 2022 it has strict rules about what may appear on them. This is the whole set in one place: every store capsule, library asset and event image, where each one shows up, and the text rules that can cost you visibility. Checked against the Steamworks documentation on 22 Oct 2026.

Store capsules: the four that sell the game

These are the images people see before they ever reach your page. All four are required, and Valve asks you to use the same key art and logo as the rest of your marketing.

AssetSize (px)Where it shows

Small capsule462 x 174 (Steam makes 184 x 69 and 120 x 45 from it)Search results, top sellers, new releases and most lists

Design the small capsule first. It is the one most players see, in search and in every list, and Steam shrinks it to 120 x 45. Valve says the logo should nearly fill it. If the title is unreadable at that size, the other capsules will not save it.

Library assets

These appear in the Steam client once someone owns or plays the game. The hero is cropped on different screens, so keep anything important inside the 860 x 380 safe area in the middle.

Event and community images

Every update, sale or festival announcement you post through the events tools needs a cover image. The icons are set once in the community section of your app.

What you may put on a capsule

Since 1 September 2022, base capsules may show only the game's artwork, its name and an official subtitle. Valve lists what is not allowed:

▪No review scores of any kind, from Steam or from the press.
▪No award names, symbols or logos. They belong in the store page accolades section instead.
▪No discount copy, such as "On Sale Now" or "Up to 90% off".
▪No calls to action, such as "Prepurchase Now" or "Wishlist now".
▪No promotion of another product, including a sequel or another game in the series.
▪No other miscellaneous text.

All capsules, store and library, must have a readable logo or name, the exact dimensions and PG-13 appropriate artwork. Valve's own wording on the penalty: a game that breaks these rules "may have limits to visibility within the Steam store and will be ineligible for featuring in official Steam sales and events."

Artwork overrides: the one place text is allowed

To show a big update, a seasonal event, a battle pass or new DLC on your capsules, upload the special images as an Artwork Override in the Graphical Assets tab. Pick a start and end time, and the capsules switch back to the default art on their own afterwards.

▪Text on a capsule must be an override, and an override can run for at most one month.
▪The text must be localized into every language the game supports.
▪It may only describe new content. Discount copy and calls to action are still not allowed.
▪Upload the default capsules first. An override replaces them; it does not stand in for them.

Practical tips

▪Keep a layered source file at twice the largest size, so every export comes from the same art.
▪Check every capsule against Steam's dark interface at 100% zoom, not in your design tool at 400%.
▪Use one logo across all capsules. People should recognise the game in search and on the home page alike.
▪Mark at least four screenshots as suitable for all ages, or the game can be left out of some placements.
▪Valve offers downloadable templates with the sizes and text safe areas. Start from them.

After the capsule earns the click

Capsules get people to your page. What they see when they arrive decides the wishlist. At the very top, above the screenshots, Steam can show a live broadcast player that starts playing on its own. Most pages leave it empty. What a store broadcast is explains how it works, and the broadcast setup checklist gets one running. Loopcast keeps it live around the clock from our servers, so no PC has to stay on.

For everything else your page needs before review, work through the Steam store page checklist.
